Vancouver to Prince Rupert

I took the Sea to Sky Highway heading north from Vancouver. It goes past Whistler where much of the Winter Olympics was held. After Whistler the terrain really starts to get interesting.

This is Nairn Falls along the highway. It is a short 1.5km hike from the parking area. After this the road drops down into a valley for a while and then really climbs. That section of road is considered the steepest highway in BC. It was a slow go in the motorhome, with lots of switchbacks. When you finally get to the top, your in another mountain valley.

After this frozen over lake, you start to head down in earnest and suddenly, your in an area like Eastern Washington.

It was then up to Prince George, basically following the Fraser River. Just past Prince George I stayed for a night at this nice little lake just off the Yellowhead Highway.

This is from along the highway to Prince Rupert. The road is pretty dramatic. Snow covered mountains surround each side of the road with waterfalls everywhere falling from way up the mountain sides. It rained most of the way, so I couldn't see the mountain tops most of the time, but it still was very impressive.

One of the books I got just casually mentions this petroglyph alongside the highway. This books talks about all the points of interest along the roads leading to and in Alaska by miles from key locatons. I was able to figure out exactly where it was on my odometer. There is no sign pointing to it. Nothing to identify it along the road. And no place to park. Since there was little traffic this morning, I just pulled onto the shoulder with part of the motorhome sticking into the highway, jumped out across the two sets of railroad tracks and took some pictures.

Tomorrow morning I'll blog on Prince Rupert.
