Exploring Northern Idaho

For the past month I've been doing a lot of exploring around this area in Northern Idaho. I've been impressed with just how much of the area is still wilderness, sort of. The reason I've said “sort of” is because the area is peppered with old logging roads. The terrain is not as steep as the mountains in other parts of the west which makes the trees much more accessible. Logging is a big industry here, along with mining and recreation. With all the logging roads, the back country is pretty accessible I've been hiking, atving, exploring in the car, and even some fly fishing. Yes, that's right, I've taken up fly fishing. I like it because it gives me another excuse to explore and get out into the woods.

One day I kayaked to the island in the middle of Killarney Lake by my house. I was struck by how much it reminded me of some of the islands in the San Juan Islands. Yes, I miss not having a boat, but not enough to go out and buy one. I'm having too much fun right now with the motor home.

One of the trails I hiked was the Coeur d'Alene River Trail. It is just a hike trail along the upper reaches of the north fork. This formation is called Cathedral Rock

Part of the trail goes above some other rock formations. In fact the trail rarely drops down to the river.

It is nice to have a trail in the area that doesn't have ATV's or motorcycles on it. There are a few others. I do miss that aspect of hiking in Washington.

I'm in Seattle now starting on another adventure. I will be meeting up with my brother and sister-in-laws in the Redwoods next week for a while. After that, who knows.
