Alcan In Yukon Territory

When I told folks that I was planning on driving the Alcan in the Yukon, I was constantly warned that the road was really bad with lots of gravel sections. The thing is, my experience has been that the highway is really pretty good. The only gravel is where repairs are being made. But, the sections that are bad, especially in the last 150 miles of the Yukon, are something else. The problem is that you will be driving along a good section, then all of a sudden the road starts in undulate with frost heaves and valleys. Almost all of these are well marked with orange flags, but it still can surprise you. I found that if a kept it around 40 to 45 mph and weaved around a lot (good thing there isn't much oncoming traffic) I was ok. Except once, where I dodged one hazard only to land in another. I think I had all eight tires off the ground!

It's nice that I'm retired and can just take it slow. I can see where if your in a hurry, the highway can very frustrating at times, not to mention scary.

However, the scenery really makes up for the bad road conditions.

Once in a while there will be a turn off to some scenic viewpoint. This one is call Million Dollar Falls. Hardly anyone stops there as it isn't well marked. In fact it is only shown as a campground. There is a trail down to an observation deck. I have seen countless waterfalls in my lifetime, but this is by far the most violent. Water flying everywhere, and the roar. It was more than awesome, staggering. It takes your breath away
