2021 Snowbirds - Part 2

After spending a month at the RV resort in Yuma we went a short distance north to the Squaw (terrible name) Lake Campground and Senator Wash BLM camping area.  We like Squaw Lake because it has some great hikes and mountain biking right there as well as excellent kayaking.  We spent several weeks there a few years back when the truck broke down on our way back to the campground.  It took 3 weeks to repair.

Our trailer is tucked just off the screen behind the hill to the right.  The lake and marshland are formed by the Colorado River.  We kayaked through the marshes, hiked the many trails throughout the hills to the right, and, mountain biked through the desert hills in the background.

Last summer I bought a fat tire e-bike for myself and ordered one for Mona for her birthday.  I wasn't sure if she would like it.  Turns out, she "loves it".  A funny thing happened because of the bikes.  A couple that camped just below us had the exact same e-bikes, same make, colors, etc.  They came up and we started taking about the bikes.  When they heard we were from North Idaho they said they had recently met a couple from North Idaho who just bought an e-bike.  They asked if we knew someone named "Jim and Vicki".  Well, you can just imagine what a fun experience that was, especially when we told them that we had just been with them last month and that they had mentioned coming to Squaw Lake to check the area out!

And here we all are, Vicki, Jim, Mona, Butch (Also known as Diane) and Dave on one of the many trails next to the campground.

Jim and Vicki also carry kayaks around.  We had to show them some of the routes through the marshes and lakes, and, then pop out onto the Colorado and just have a leisurely float down it to the entrance to Squaw Lake.  We didn't quite have enough kayaks or e-bikes to go around but since we all were more than willing to share, a great time was had by all.

Lets see, what is it that you call someone you share grandchildren with.  That would be Ralph in this picture.  We share 3 grandchildren.  Ralph is Stan's dad, my daughter Michele's husband.  He and his partner, Joan, are golfing nuts and leave Montana to spend the winters in Welton, a town just east of Yuma with a bunch of golf courses.  We always like to get together with them whenever we're all in the Yuma area.  It's great to share grandchildren with someone you really like.

After spending several weeks at Squaw Lake and Senator Wash we took off to meet up again with Jim and Vicki near Ajo.  Mona and I had not camped in that area before and decided it sounded like a great area to explore.

On the way I caught a glimpse of something flying off the trailer as a large semi when flying past us.  I stopped fearing that the hold down strap for the e-bikes on the back of the trailer came off, only to find out that the bedroom window had blown out.  That semi went by us really fast and must have caused enough suction to pop the window out.  Amazing.  There wasn't even one shard of glass inside, it had all blown out.  Luckily, we were just about at an off ramp that had a convenience store.  I was able to cut up some cardboard we had and duct tape and garbage bags I was able to seal up the window until something a little more sturdy could be installed.

Mona is Awesome.  Shortly after we arrived in Ajo she was able to get us Covid vaccine shots at the Fry's, a Kroger owned supermarket, in Tucson.  It worked out to be great timing as we would be staying in Tucson when the second shots were scheduled and I could go to Home Depot and get parts to temporarily board up the window.

Here's the new boarded up window.  Not too bad looking if you ask me.  It should last until we get home and get the replacement window installed.  They manufacturer said it will take 6 to 8 weeks to get the replacement.

Sunset from our campsite in Ajo.

This is a picture taken with the drone of our campsite.  That's Jim and Vicki's trailer down the road from us.  I don't use the drone very often.  For one, I'm not very skilled at flying it.  For another, it seems like many of the areas where we stay are not drone friendly.  But it is fun to once in a while to get it up in the air for a look around and maybe take some pictures.

Here are the two ladies and their e-bikes in Ajo.  There are lots of ATV type trails just made for fat tire e-bikes and mountain bikes around Ajo.  The weather was great and many miles of them were taken with the e-bikes.  Unfortunately on one Mona fell and bummed up her knee some.  It is weeks later now and it still bothers her some.  She will get it checked out when we get home.  She can still hike and ride, but we just have to take it a little bit easier.
