I guess I'm turning into a "Snowbird". This will be my third year of migrating south for at least part of the winter. And each year I seem to be staying a little longer. I love the seasons in Rose Lake Idaho, but still, it is nice to get away from the cold for a little sun and warmth. And I've become a fan of the annual gathering of radio amateurs in the desert near Quartzsite Arizona called Quartzfest.
In looking at the weather reports, the more direct route down I-15 promised some below freezing nights and snow most of the way down whereas taking the longer route down the coast looked mostly sunny, unusual for January. It was a no-brainer! Down the coast I went

First stop on the coast, Yachats Oregon. I know, I was just there a few months ago, but I love the Tillicum Beach campground and the surrounding area. It's just a great spot.

Speaking of great spots, my next stop was Harris Beach State Park near Brookings Oregon. The beach there is such a great place for a photographer. I spent a few days there this trip, much less than normal. It was forecast to snow. Can you imagine that. Everyone living there was getting excited but I didn't want to get stuck and whole purpose of this trip was to get warm.

The next two days I traveled, staying at Walmarts overnight. At least they are good for something. Then Joshua Tree National Park for a few days. Again I was there last year but needed to cut my visit short to hurry home. This shot was from my campsite.

And just a short walk from my camp was this rock formation.

One thing that is taking me a little time to get used to is seeing all these mountains with nothing but brush and cactus on them. Honestly, I don't think I'd like to live in the desert, but it sure is an interesting place to visit. Next stop, Quartzfest.
